Make MacOS terminal delete words (⌥ + ⌫ / alt+backspace)

July 18, 20221 min read

MacOS's terminal can be frustrating to use. One of my biggest annoyances is that it doesn't have a delete word keybind. This short post will help you set up a shortcut to delete words in MacOS terminal without resorting to the "Use Option as Meta key" option.

To do that, all you need to do is to open the terminal, press ⌘ + ; to open preferences, then head to the "Profiles" tab and click on the "Keyboard" tab. Add a new shortcut and pick your desired keybind - I used ⌥ + ⌫. Set its value to "\027" (Ctrl + W).
